Electronic signatures in the European Union
eIDAS distinguishes simple, advanced, and qualified electronic signatures. A qualified signature has the legal effect of a handwritten signature across the EU.
The framework
Regulation (EU) 910/2014 is the current baseline. Regulation (EU) 2024/1183 updates the European digital identity framework. Member states still have their own contract rules.
Essential and Pro use the standard inSigner signature. Qualified signatures for Europe are an Enterprise option, together with the AATL check.
Do not mix the levels
Calling a standard signature a qualified signature would be inaccurate. Choose the level the document requires, then keep the completion record with the file.
- A standard inSigner signature is an electronic signature with a completion record. It is not a qualified electronic signature. QES and the AATL check are Enterprise options.
- The record connects the document hash, the people invited, and the completion events. It does not replace a notarization, a wet-ink statute, or advice from your counsel.
